Training topics covered
- What is dysphagia?
- The normal swallow/ swallow anatomy
- Common causes for swallowing difficulties
- Signs and symptoms of dysphagia
- The risks associated with dysphagia including choking, aspiration, pneumonia and mortality
- Important things to consider when supporting someone with dysphagia: positioning, equipment, feeding strategies, IDDSI food and fluid consistencies and testing methods, thickening fluids safely, the impact of the environment at mealtimes
- Importance of oral hygiene
- Alternatives to oral feeding
- When to refer on to a Speech and Language Therapist and other health professionals
Our training will support towards the RCSLT Eating and Drinking Competency Framework (2020) Level 2.
Who is this training for?
For anyone supporting individuals with dysphagia e.g. carers, nurses, allied health professionals, GPs, family members, care home managers and catering staff.
Yearly refresher training is recommended to keep knowledge and skills up to date.
